This is a face I still cannot look at without tearing up automatically. This beautiful boy came into our lives in the blizzard of April 2011. Dumped by a family that no longer wanted to care for an aging dog, Rookie needed a new home---and a new name. I named him Rookie because it was only fitting for a German Shepherd to have a military name, and a name that would give him a fresh start. This boy taught us so much about the enduring power of love. He struggled right along with us as we worked through his mobility issues, and was with us for a mere 10, glorious months. Rookie, it feels as though you never left. I feel your presence all around and am so grateful for our time together. But I know now you are past the pain. I love you my sweet son.
